  Since the first world's fair in London in 1851, they've been held worldwide. The United States has held many world's fairs starting with New York's Crystal Palace in 1853. However, the last world's fair in the United States was New Orleans' 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. The last in the North America was Vancouver's Expo 86.

  The San Francisco Bay Area has hosted three expos: the 1894 California Mid-Winter Exposition in Golden Gate Park, the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in what is now the Marina District, and the 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island.
